We told you Bloomberg’s Dan Fletcher was one of the young talents in the media industry to keep an eye on. Apparently Facebook was also keeping an eye on Fletcher, one of the FORBES 30 Under 30 in Media, because it just hired him to be its new managing editor.
It’s not immediately clear what that means. Facebook doesn’t have an editorial department per se, although it did hire Vadim Lavrusik away from Mashable last year to lead its “journalist program.” Lavrusik’s efforts are mostly aimed at outreach, ie. getting journalists to use the tools Facebook offers for sharing and creating content and building audiences.
The speculation is that Fletcher could be working on something more akin to what Dan Roth is doing at LinkedIn. Roth, formerly of Fortune (and a former colleague of mine) is in charge of LinkedIn Today, a personalized news aggregation product. I asked Fletcher about his new role (via Facebook message, of course) but haven’t heard back just yet.
Apparently flattery isn’t the secret to getting a job at Facebook: In 2010, when he was at Time, Fletcher wrote a cover story about the social networking site, calling out its “shaky” privacy practices and nicknaming it “the web’s sketchy Big Brother.” (Thanks to Kashmir Hill for remembering that one.)
