YouPorn Users Exposed In Breach (Or, Why You Should Have An Email Address Not Linked To Your Identity)

A bunch of YouPorn users have been outed (but not these two; this is a stock pic)

Those who enjoy Internet nudie scenes are dealing with their own exposure online this week. After the chat service for one of the porn websites run by  Luxembourg-based adult entertainment company Manwin was compromised, the email addresses and passwords for thousands of users of YouPorn, which is essentially a YouTube for porn enthusiasts, have been posted online.

“See anyone you know?” asked technologist Ashkan Soltani, linking to the list on Twitter. Soltani also created a visualization of the passwords used most frequently by YouPorn users. “YouPorn123456789? tops the list, though other words related to YouPorn’s content were also quite popular. Less sensitive than the passwords in this hack, though, are the email addresses themselves. Scrolling through the list — which consists mainly of Hotmail and Yahoo accounts, I saw quite a few that are of the standard firstname.lastname variety, making their identities easy to ascertain, meaning a good number of people have been involuntarily outed as YouPorn watchers.

“YouPorn chat, a service operated and hosted by a third party, failed to take the appropriate precautions in securing its user data,” says a Manwin spokesperson. “The YouPorn chat service has currently been disabled and terminated and will remain as such until the investigation is completed.”

This is why it’s a good idea to have at least one alternate email address not clearly linked to your identity. If there are certain sites that you frequent on the Internet that you don’t want tied back to you, you may want to create an InternetNobody@gmail.com-type address. This isn’t just advice for porn watchers. If you’re signing up anywhere online for an account where you’re going to be making public commentary that you don’t want easily linked back to your identity, an alternate address is a wise move.
